Outfits for The Big Day

I don’t know about you, but I like to plan what I am going to wear on Christmas Day.  Although to be fair, I pretty much do this for most special events that I have in my diary. I guess that’s what Stylists do, because putting an outfit together that works usually takes a little bit of forethought.

Christmas Day is no exception however, it is a little bit different as there is usually a fair bit of sitting, eating and drinking that goes on so comfort is quite a high priority.  There will also be lots of photos taken and even if you try to hide from most of them, it’s unlikely that you can dodge them all, so when I say comfy, jogging bottoms probably won’t cut it.

So where does that leave you?  Well, I do think that it’s a day when you can wear something a little bit special.  Something sparkly, colourful or festive so my suggestions are all dresses.  Stay with me because I don’t mean a going out dress, but a dress that is the perfect balance of smart/casual.  It’s not an easy brief because I think a lot of people do find that smart/casual balance quite difficult but I hope I have pulled out a few helpful suggestions below to give you some ideas if nothing else.

This first dress from Mango is pretty much perfection in my mind. It’s navy which is a great colour for most people, it has some gorgeous detailing with the ribbing on the front and the sheer arms, it’s pulled in at the middle to show off that waist, (yes we do all have one) and the length is perfect with opaque tights and a cute little ankle boot. Plus I think this would be comfortable all day too.  You could also have a lot of fun in the earring department as I think this dress lends itself very well to earrings so and I have suggested a couple of options below (link under picture) which in my opinion would finish the look very nicely.  The only caveat on this dress being that if you are blessed with bigger boobage than me then the highneck won’t be as flattering.

Pave silver Ear Jackets

Etoile Chandeliers

Cos is a favourite shop of mine.  I like it because they are a little bit different and they are not afraid to use a bit of colour.  This colbolt blue dress  is great for Spring colour tones, and I would team this myself with a beautiful deep red lipstick and matching nails.  It can be given a more casual edge by wearing with a biker jacket if you are out and about on Christmas day, and again little ankle boots, or smart black trainers even.  I love the gathered waist and the fact that the skirt skims over the hips.  A very flattering shape for women who are more on the curvy side.

And I could not do a post on smart/casual dresses without including a shirt dress as these are defininatly a style to consider.  I’ve picked one from Allsaints as again their styles tend to have a little bit more edge.  The dress I have picked out below has a draw string waist to add a bit of shape and cute ruffles on the sleeve and shoulder. It is a bit of an investment, but it’s silk and I think this would be something you could wear on so many other occasions, meaning your price per wear is good value.   In fact the best thing about this dress is that I don’t think it needs to be an actual occasion to wear it.  This could be dressed down for the school run by just choosing wisely what you wear with it.  So Christmas day this would I would add some accessories and maybe a funky coloured tight.  For school run, in the spring just a biker jacket and some plain white trainers.  This is the sort of dress that can get you out of a jeans rut, which makes it a very useful item to have in your wardrobe.  And more accessories suggested to finish the look on this one too.

Black Pave Ear Climbers

Finally, I had to include a red dress, as I’m all over the colour red at the moment.  And this little number from H&M caught my eye because it is a relaxed style, but made fun by the frill detail on the sleeves.  It’s not a knitted dress but rather it is made of a crepe material which I think for this sort of style is better as it drapes rather than clings…if you know what I’m saying. And it is a total bargain at under £25 which even if you never wear again is pretty good value. Team with the faithful opaque tights and ankle boots for your Christmas Day walk.

So I hope that has given you a few ideas.  Only 6 sleeps to go and I am on full count down.  We are not hosting this year, my in-laws always do which is lush as it means that we get a real break.  I just need to make sure everything is packed up and ready to go on Friday.  Slight complication is that we are taking 2 guinea pigs with us this year as well, which according to the husband will leave us no spare space in the boot so the pressure is on to pack light!!  Not sure this is actually possible but I’m going to have to give it a go I think. What has been quite helpful is the mini beauty gift I have been getting every morning from my SpaceNK advent calendar. It’s going to save me taking up full size products and that will save space for a self confessed beauty junkie.
