The Importance of Style in Personal Branding

For most of history, companies have spent a large chunk of their marketing budget on building strong corporate brands. From eye catching logos to messaging you won’t forget the focus has been on creating a polished, unified image to the world. And for a long time, this worked. A strong company brand was synonymous with trust, credibility, and success. But something has changed.

We’re now in the era of the individual.

With the rise of social media and the growing appetite for authenticity, the balance of power has shifted. Personal brands—the stories and identities of individuals—have emerged as a driving force in shaping public perception, creating opportunities, and even driving company growth. Entrepreneurs and professionals at all levels are stepping out from behind the corporate façade to share their personal journeys, values, and unique perspectives.

And the world is paying attention.

Why?

In a world increasingly driven by technology, people are craving connection. They want to see the human side of business—real faces, real stories, and real values.

Social media platforms like LinkedIn, Instagram, and even TikTok have given individuals the tools to build and amplify their personal brands. Leaders no longer rely solely on PR teams to shape their image. They can write posts, create videos, or host live sessions that reach thousands, if not millions, of people in an instant.

This direct connection is powerful because it’s personal. It bypasses the corporate filter and shows the individual for who they are. And people are far more likely to trust, follow, and engage with a person they feel they know than with a faceless organisation.

Take the example of CEOs and founders who share openly about their challenges, mistakes, and lessons learned. These posts often go viral—not because they’re perfect, but because they’re relatable. In an era where trust is hard-earned, this kind of vulnerability can be transformative. Podcasts like Diary of a CEO and How to Fail are all about this and they are two of the most listened podcasts out there.

Style is a crucial element of your personal brand

What you wear is hugely powerful, because whilst first impressions are extremely powerful, the continuous impression is equally important. And the reason for this is because it helps you to become VISIBLE.

For me as a stylist, the most important element of style is authenticity. That the clothes on the outside accurately represent who you are on the inside. Authenticity is the most powerful of all vibes that you can give off and what you wear taps into this hugely. Your clothes say who you are without you having to speak and if you can harness this idea and the influence you cab achieve through this, your impact on people is beyond measure.

Colours play big part in your personal brand. The psychology of colour is fascinating, and you can wear certain colours on various days to create the impact you want on yourself and others. For example because green is calming and speaks empathy, non-aggressive, and relaxing vibes, it is good if you have a. day of appraisals for example at work. Tying in your favourite colours into you personal brand can be something that become synonymous to you.

Understanding how to dress your body shape and what styles speak to you also helps you to create your personal brand with confidence. Once you know what looks/styles you aspire to create it is much easier to shop within this remit. It keeps you focused and you can start to see the threads that pull all your looks together. For me I like my style to be effortless, chic, comfortable, oversized and quietly confident. You just need to take one look at my instagram to see how these words flow through my outfits to create a consistent and authentic style.

For those of you who are at the start of your style journey, all of this can seem very overwhelming and impossible to know where to start. My advice to you is to start with your own wardrobe first. Be brutal and get rid of the things that do not serve you anymore. Make a list of what you need and take your time to recreate your wardrobe and build up a personal style that you feel really represents who you are. Like with anything in life, things that you put time and effort into, you will reap the rewards from. If you struggle massively or don't have the time, get in touch as this is exactly where I can help.
